The Marque

A diagnostic framework for structural load.

In Jacqueline Carey’s Kushiel saga, a marque is a tattoo inked on the back of those bound to service. It accumulates with each completed engagement. When the full pattern is visible — when the work is done — the debt is paid and the person is free.

The marque is not a punishment. It’s a record of what has been carried, and a precise measure of when the carrying is complete.

That’s the right frame for what this diagnostic does.

The load that doesn’t have a name

Every system carries a load. Some of it is chosen. Most of it isn’t. Some is visible — the work, the commitments, the structure. The part that does the real damage is usually invisible: the load inherited rather than built, the identity maintained because dismantling it seems more expensive than holding it together, the gap between what the system says it is and how it actually operates.

The Marque Diagnostic reads that load. It maps what a system is actually carrying against what its structure can sustain — and identifies precisely where those two things have stopped matching.

What it finds

Four things, in sequence.

Carrying capacity. The structural limit of the system. Not what it says it can handle. What it actually can, given its current architecture.

Invisible load. What the system is carrying that doesn’t register as weight. The cost of maintained incoherence. The energy spent holding a structure that doesn’t correspond to anything real.

Drift. How far the system has moved from its own limits, and how long it has been moving. Dysfunctional systems don’t break. They drift, normalize the drift, and call it stability.

Leverage point. Where a targeted intervention changes the whole structure. Not the symptom. The paradigm.

Two scales, one framework

The Marque Diagnostic applies at two scales.

At organizational scale: for organizations that function well internally but produce less than their structure should allow. The problem is rarely talent or effort. It’s usually invisible architecture — the connections not seen, the load not named, the carrying capacity already exceeded and called resilience.

At individual scale: the same framework applied to a person’s emotional and cognitive carrying capacity. 

The framework is the same. The system changes. The load is always real.
